Hismelt is a direct smelting process for making iron straight from the ore. Fine iron ores and non-coking coals are injected directly into a molten iron bath, contained within a Smelt Reduction Vessel (SRV), to produce high quality molten pig iron. The excess gas produced during the process is used for power generation, production of direct reduced iron (an alternative iron input for scrap), or as fuel gas.

The process can be considered a both a potential replacement for the blast furnace and as a new source of low cost iron units for BOF or EAF steelmaking. The technology offers advantages such as lower operating costs; lower capital intensity, lower environmental impact, greater raw material and operational flexibility.

Energy Savings Potential

With no raw material processing required, the HIsmelt process uses less energy to produce each tonne of hot metal.

CO2 Emission Reduction Potential

This technology can reduce CO2 emissions per tonne of hot metal by close to 20% when compared to the typical BF route.


Production costs are in the range of 95% to 65% of the conventional route costs.
